The 93rd Oscars ceremony will be held on April 25 in Los Angeles, and unlike the Golden Globes or the Emmy Awards, the ceremony will be held in person. Despite the severe conditions put in place due to the pandemic, many stars may be present. Among them are previously named South Korean director Harrison Ford, Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon and more.

The Academy of Oscars unveiled the list of nominated films and personalities in mid-March, and the new organization was made public on Monday, April 19. The course of this year’s edition is exceptional, like the year 2020. With cinemas that have long been closed all over the world due to the Covid-19 epidemic, streaming platforms have never been so present among the nominations. This is the case of Netflix, which has 35, spread over 13 works. It also makes available its nominated films in a category created especially before the ceremony.
Here is a selection of the films nominated for the 2021 Oscars available on Netflix.
In first place, we find the film which breaks all records with ten nominations, including those for “Best film”, “Best director” or even “Best actor”: Mank , by David Fincher , produced by Netflix. With Gary Oldman in the lead role and shot entirely in black and white, it is a biography of the American screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz , who was commissioned to write the screenplay for the film Citizen Kane(considered one of the greatest films in the history of cinema) by Orson Wells, in the 1930s. Alcoholic and somewhat depressed, he was for the occasion housed in a ranch while he was writing, and is closely monitored to meet imposed deadlines. The second film to win the most nominations, six in total including “Best Picture”, is The Chicago Seven , by Aaron Sorkin . The Mission, by Paul Greengrass, has four nominations (including those for “Best Film Music” and “Best Scenery and Artistic Direction”). It is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles, published in 2016. The plot takes place in 1870 in the United States. Here we are Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a Texan captain, who travels the country trying to bring a little girl, kidnapped by the Kiowas, home. With Tom Hanks in the lead role, and the young German actress Helena Zengel in the role of Johanna Leonberger.

An American Ode
Reviews of Ron Howard’s film An American Ode have been mixed. After being nominated for the 2021 Golden Globes in the “Best Supporting Actress” category and, two months later, nominated in the “Worst Supporting Actress” category at the Razzie Awards for the same film, here is Glenn Close was once again nominated for “Best Supporting Actress” at the Oscars. The film also has another nomination, that of “Best Makeup and Hairstyle”. In this film, we follow JD Vance (played by Gabriel Basso) who is forced to return to his small town in southern Ohio for a family affair, with his mother (played by Amy Adams), suffering from severe addictions, and his grandmother (Glenn Close).
Pieces of a Woman
After receiving the award for best actress at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2020, and being nominated in the same category at the Golden Globes, British actress Vanessa Kirby is again at the Oscars, for her role in Pieces of a Woman , by Kornél Mundruczó (which is the only nomination for this film). This drama lifts the taboo on the tragedy of giving birth to a stillborn child, a tragedy confronting the couple Martha and Sean (the latter is played by Shia LaBeouf ).

The White Tiger
The White Tiger, of Ramin Bahrani is nominated in the category “Best Adapted Screenplay”. Indeed, the film is adapted from the novel of the same title, by Indian writer Aravind Adiga published in 2008, which won the Booker Prize the same year. The drama follows the story of Balram Halwai (played by Adarsh Gourav), from a caste of servants, seeking to free himself. During his rise, he will make sure to make himself indispensable as a servant to the rich personalities for whom he works. Gourav is accompanied on screen by actors Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Rajkummar Rao.

Years after the end of the Vietnam War, four African-American veterans decide to return to the country’s jungle to find the body of their unit leader dead in action and a buried treasure. The Wisdom of the Octopus
The moving film The Wisdom of the Octopus , by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed, is nominated in the category “Best documentary film”. It took ten long years to complete this project, in which we follow Craig Foster (who also produced the film) as he explores an underwater kelp forest at the tip of South Africa. During his numerous snorkeling descents, he discovers an octopus that he will follow and try to tame for a year. This sweet human-animal relationship will have a much bigger impact on his life than expected.
Journey to the Moon
For the nomination of “Best animated film”, the American-Chinese film Voyage Towards the Moon , by Glen Keane is in the running, in particular against Soul and En avant , the last Pixar and Disney. Having been rocked by a legend her parents told her, a young girl passionate about science decides to build a rocket to go to the moon and meet the moon goddess her now deceased mother told her about. During her trip, she discovers a unique universe, populated by fantastic creatures.

Eurovision Song Contest, the Story of Fire Saga
Eurovision Song Contest, the Story of Fire Saga , by David Dobkin is nominated in the “Best Original Song” category. After witnessing the victory of the Swedish group ABBA in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974, Lars Ericksson and Sigrit Ericksdottir, two Icelandic musicians from the city of Húsavík, dream of winning the Eurovision Song Contest and representing their country. With Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams in the two lead roles. The song nominated for the Oscars bears the name of this small coastal town, to the delight of its inhabitants.
We also find the films Midnight in the Universe , by and with George Clooney (nominated for Best Visual Effects), and Life Before Yourself , based on the legendary work of Romain Gary, with the great Sophia Loren (nominated for Best original song for “Io Si” , by Laura Pausini and Niccolò Agliardi).
Other Oscar-nominated films are available on other streaming platforms, such as Regina King’s One Night in Miami (three nominations), Borat 2 , by Jason Woliner (two nominations) on Amazon Prime Video or the film by successful animation, Soul (three nominations) on Disney +. On the other hand, Nomadland (which leaves favorite after winning everything at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs etc.) or Sound of Metal are not yet visible in France, where cinemas should reopen in mid-May .
